John P. Chacona, 92 of 415 Second Street, Athens, died April 7, 2006 at the Robert Packer Hospital following a extended illness. John was born on March 9, 1914 in Ithaca, N.Y., he was the son of the late Paul and Georgia Mattheos Chacona.

John graduated from Sayre High School in 1934. He attended Cornell University, aspiring to be a physician, which was a life-long dream. His father's death in 1936 forced him home to operate confectionery business, The Garden of Sweets. In early years of Chacona's Restaurant he was a partner with his brother Nick. He was a veteran of W.W.II and finished his career with 25 years of service as a well-known Valley Prudential Insurance agent.

John is survived by: his son, David, at home; brother, Nicholas (Evelyn) Chacona of Sayre: nephews, John (Charlene) Chacona of Newark, Del., Paul B. (Claudia) Chacona of Athens, Theodore (Jeanne) Chacona of Sayre, James (Pat) Chacona of Athens, William and Chris Chacona of Sayre and Paul N. (Kona) Chacona of Rochester, N.Y.; nieces, Paula Tompkins of Knoxville, Tenn., Georgia Chacona of Sayre and Donna (John) Detrick of Sayre; sisters-in-law, Ruth Chacona of Sayre and Ann Stover of Athens; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

John was preceded in death by: his parents; his first wife, Mary Ricketts Chacona in 1950; his second wife, Yole Petropoly Chacona in 1993; his brother, Theodore Chacona in 1994; sister, Bertha Covello in 1996; and nephew, Marcus Chacona in 2005.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, April 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Blauvelt Funeral Home, 126 N. Elmer Ave., Sayre. A grave side sevice will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens with Father Vincent Langan of St. John's Catholic Church officiating.
